Are you having a good time? Amanda Tenfjord, a 25-year old Greek-Norwegian singer and songwriter, is most likely having the best time of her life right now!
Ahead of her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Le journal des jeunes members Miruna and Nikola, asked Amanda Tenfjord, some questions regarding her passion for music, her song "Die Together" and her expectations for Turin.
How did your passion for music start?
When I was very, very young! My first try at playing the piano, was at the age ofi five. Few years later, I started taking classical singing lessons. As a teenager, I tried to write my own songs, because I wanted to express myself through music. This was a time when I also took part in a music competition, and the prize was that I could record my songs in the studio. I uploaded my songs to Spotify, then I joined a band with my classmates, and we did concerts and this was the path that turned myself into a music artist.
What is the creative process behind ‘’Die Together'?
"Die Together" is a song about love. I was going through a rough personal time and I could not write music for more than a year. Once, I entered the studio with my music partner, Bjørn Helge Then, for a year and a half I could not focus myself on music. Emotionally, I was in a mess and I could not externalize what I was feeling. There was one time when I tried to enter the studio with my music partner. I told him my thoughts, he liked the meaning of the lyrics and within a day we wrote the song. With "Die Together" it was essentially like putting an end to this relationship and moving forward.
What is the story behind you becoming the Greek representative for Eurovision?
First, all the artists who submitted songs for ESC were great! The announcement was made two days before my exams (I am in my sixth year as a student in the Trondheim Medical University). I had become very anxious because of the exams, so this news brought me so much comfort and joy! As soon as my name was announced by ERT, I received hundreds of messages on Instagram, phone calls and I really appreciated how supportive and positive everyone was with me. I cannot describe with words how happy I am, to represent my country in the Eurovision Song Contest.
So far, how is your Eurovision journey going on, and what is the most fun thing about it?
This is an epic journey for me with so much creative work! One of the most fun things I can think of is the Eurovision special TV show that will be broadcasted by ERT. In this show, famous Greek Eurostars, will share with me tips and useful information from their ESC experience. We will talk about the vibe of ESC, the backstage, that feeling of eagerness to get from the backstage to the main stage and many other wonderful things. I feel honored to meet these artists.
What are your plans for the staging in Turin?
For my stage presence, I am collaborating with the experienced, innovative Choreographer/Creative Director Fokas Evagelinos (@fokasevagelinos). He is a wonderful, warm person and an amazing creative professional. What you are going to see, is something very beautiful.
Are you a Eurovision fan? What are your favorites from this year? Is there some song from previous years you like?
Of course! When I was a kid, Eurovision was like a big festival for my family and friends. Our house was full of people and we were ordering souvlaki with gyros, we were watching the show and rating the performances. The first Eurovision Contest that I watched, was the one of 2005, when Elena Paparizou ended in first place. Also I love ESC songs such as Euphoria by Loreen and Fairytale by Alexander Rybak. I should tell you also that I was in love with Alexander (chuckles).
Where do you take your inspiration from? Is it real life experiences or something else?
Yes, real life experiences mostly inspire my work.
What kind of goal do you have for Eurovision and beyond?
I’ve heard that Greece is in the top spots in Eurovision bets and predictions. But I am aware that these things change fast and the stage presence of each artist plays a big part in his final ranking in Eurovision. My one and only goal is to do the best for my country in Eurovision Song Contest.
