Heartstopper: Will it Stop People's Hearts?

Updated: Jun 4, 2023

The highly anticipated coming-of-age drama series that “shows the beauty of queer love” will soon be released on Netflix.

Heartsopper, based on Alice Oseman’s web comic and best-selling graphic novel series, has become one of the most anticipated queer teen romance shows of 2022.

This eight-episode series that will be out on Netflix on April 22 follows the love story of the openly gay overthinker Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and the buoyant rugby player Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) in an all-boys grammar school. The coming-of-age drama explores a wide range of themes, from mental health to bullying, in an attempt to inspire a new generation of LGBTQ+ youth.

Heartstopper is a show that celebrates individuality, promotes acceptance and above all puts a smile on your face,” See-Saw Films executive producer Patrick Walters said in a statement. With a lot of queer media being saturated with trauma and conflict, Heartstopper attempts to “spread joy” and “show the beauty of queer love,” according to Alice Oseman and Kit respectively.

Heartstopper is also recognised for its authentic cast of actors from across the LGBTQ+ community. “I knew that I wanted Heartstopper to have a diverse range of characters, and it wasn’t just focused on these two boys,” Oseman stated when explaining the arduous process of adapting Heartstopper for Netflix in an Attitude interview. “Lots of people were reading the story, and I wanted people to feel they could see themselves in it.”

In a recent interview with Gay Times, Kizzy Edgell, playing Tara Jones, commented on the importance of Hearstopper as an inclusive representation of the queer experience for all audiences. “Heartstopper is long overdue [and will be] relevant for all audiences, no matter how old you are – young, old, queer, not queer. It’s for everyone.”

“I think it’s a good way to introduce kids to the concept of being queer,” she adds. “It’s not like there’s a video that you can put on and show kids to teach them how to be towards queer people, or if they are queer, to figure it out. There’s not many kid-friendly ways to do that so I think it’s helpful.”

With only two days left for the premiere of Heartstopper, many are looking forward to watching this heart-warming and wholesome queer series.
