It seems that the contemporary youth has forgotten the beauty of being knowledgeable about every field – at least a little bit. Currently, students with an inclination to humanitarian subjects feel disgust – sometimes even hate – towards mathematics, physics, and any other STEM-related subject, while those with exceptional numerical capabilities cannot imagine themselves sitting by the fireplace, analyzing another masterpiece by Chekhonv. In every aspect, this situation is unfortunate, as in order to maintain both personal and social equilibrium, one should strive to progress not solely in a selected area, but have passion for everything intended to understand human nature.
In its very essence, literature stands for “human science”, meaning that it gives an insight into our inner world: a universe corrupted by a materialistic culture and filled with an underestimation of life. Be it prose or poetry, any literary composition is powerful enough to evoke certain emotions, make people think and even change the way of perceiving their surroundings. Thus, literature makes it easier for an average human to explore a character deeply, understand their subconsciousness and draw conclusions. But can everyone write a compelling story, one that would be strong enough to start a revolution?
The answer is yes and no. Many people start their first scribbles at a very young age, and those first drafts are an accurate representation of how a toddler feels like: are the any visible signs of anxiety? Do they have a rebellious nature? Or is there a strict realist hiding?
Later in life, when confronted with a larger number of people at school, many of young writers experience some sort of “drowning in a sea of diversity”. In other words, a child may want to isolate themselves from everyone, thus begin writing in an entirely new way, usually in the form of letters. Normally, such journals are embellished with illustrations from either real life or a fantasy world, say, a cartoon. It can be interpreted in two ways:
The child dislikes their surroundings , hence portrays the mean girl in their class with a huge nose.
The child has no one to share their feelings with, so they describe their daily activities in a strictly realistic form.
We may now draw a parallel between a child’s and a professional writer’s perception of writing. Both of them try to convey certain feelings through either a distorted view of what is actually happening or a direct way.
Armed with a pen, a human creation may start wars and end fights. Yes, we all are strong enough to influence society; however, some may end up using their power in a completely incorrect way, such as promoting inequality among sexes, finding excuses for rape or even striving to ban abortion worldwide. These can be encountered practically in every corner of social media, ranging from Reddit to Facebook, and can have a considerable impact on the way people think.
With this information in mind, let us inspire others positively and try to eliminate bias, since the best way a person is influenced is by media and books.
