Who are Anne Frank and Eva Schloss? These names can be familiar to some of you. They are victims of the Holocaust during the Second World War. Anne Frank is the girl who is famous for her diary. She wrote in it every single day that she was hiding. Actually, Anne was given a diary for her thirteenth birthday. It was something she really wanted. She wrote that eight people lived in a small apartment and lived in difficult conditions. She also wrote other things about her life. From her diary, we can realize that she was very hopeful. She mentioned: “I don’t think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains.” The diary was not completely filled, there still were several empty pages.
Moreover, she wrote about her step-sister, Eva Schloss. Eva was born in Vienna—in Austria—and that’s where her family lived for generations. When the Nazis invaded Austria, her father realized that they couldn’t stay there anymore, so eventually, they got out, first to Belgium and then settled in Amsterdam. After they had been there for just three months, Holland was invaded as well. Lastly, they tried to escape to England, but it was too late. Eva also lived in hiding with Anne and they were eventually betrayed and handed to the Nazis. But unlike Anne, Eva survived till 2021 and as long as she lived, she tried to convey to the world what had happened to them. Eva was a co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust UK and continued to share her story with groups all over the world. She became extremely successful when she was awarded an MBE, a top British honor, in 2012.
Lastly, I want to finish off my article with her speech: “We need to teach people that we’re all human beings. It doesn’t matter what color or what religion we are. We are all human beings, and we have to be treated equally.”
